Mae Thai is one of our favorite Thai Food takeaways in Stockholm. It’s conveniently located at the edge of Mariatorget, which is a park with fountain and garden on Södermalm island. The restaurant has a small pavilion-looking booth that cooks the food, as well as outdoor benches and tables if you want to sit here and eat. Like most Swedish restaurants or cafes, they have self-serving counter where you get your cutleries and water.
What I love the most is that they provide an extensive menu of vegan dishes. Many dishes can be made either vegetarian (which I guess use dairy cream or egg as ingredient) or vegan. Every dish is freshly cooked after ordering, and they come in a great portion that definitely makes you full. I also like the fact that they don’t dilute everything to cater “local taste”, so most dishes keep their original spiciness and zest intact. Yes we definitely need those authentic Thai flavors!
There are many favorites to count, but I certainly love the Singaporean rice and coriander wok. I have to warn you that the Singaporean rice can come quite spicy, even I can’t tolerate it without shedding a few tears while eating. The noodles usually come with a separate tiny jar of chili powder, it’s up to you to sprinkle it or not.
If you ever visit Stockholm, and especially the Södermalm, and if you want something quick, tasty and vegan, you should check Mae Thai out. I also insist that you take your time eating out during the summer time. It’s such a pleasure sitting next to the garden and have your meal, without the fuss of bring your whole picnic set.
