This fall was surprisingly warm. The wind was chilly, and the sun was low, but during the day it still felt like summer. I enjoyed the evening walk in the Nobel Park. It’s a small open park close to the water, which makes a pleasant stroll in the evening. People are running or walking their pets before heading to a nice dinner. You instantly get to relax without walking too far from the city. This is one reason that I love Stockholm so much. There are those easy-to-access places in the city where we can chill out and regain the inner peace.

In the early fall it could still be warm during the day. The Gant dress is perfect. The length is ok for a petite, and sleeves can be wrapped up a bit when it’s warm or let down when it’s cold. The only disadvantage is, as usual, the opening of the v-neck part is too low for us petite and it’s challenging to fix it without changing the original design.

I was also happy to find a second hand, black shoulder bag with minimal design that’s small enough. I am not sure if it’s vintage. For petites, especially those in small sizes too, the size of the shoulder bag is important, as it can easily overwhelm you when it’s too big. So I spent quite some time searching for the right bag before I found this one.

Sustainable Fashion Rethinking

Sustainability is a popular word lately. The more we realize that the resources from our planet is limited, the more we need to rethink about everything, the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the things we use, the way we use them. It’s all connected together. There are many factors to consider when it comes to sustainable fashion.

DESIGN
Design is the first step. It starts with the concept before a clothing item is born. As designer they have to think about whether the design is wearable. When clothes end up not sold it’s a big waste. Perhaps they shouldn’t even be created from the beginning. Materials are another important factor. Does the production of raw material require a lot of energy? Is it environment-friendly? Which materials would be preferable, man made or derived from animals?

Annika Matilda Wendelboe from Sweden is one of the first designers to use organic and Cradle to Cradle certifiedCM materials which could be safely composted when the garments reach the end of their life. Many of her clothes are creative and multifunctional. This Lille Prinsen (Little Prince) jacket is made from hemp, a very environment-friendly material, could be machine-washed and could be worn with the scarf on or without.

PRODUCTION
Production involves textile weaving, dying, pattern cutting and sewing etc. There are always new technology to aid the process, such as using software to facilitate the pattern cutting, so there would be less waste throwing away. Using non-toxic dying method greatly benefits people involved in the manufacturing and also the environment.

Creative pattern cutting from The North Face Zero Waste Project products as little waste as possible .

DISTRIBUTION
Nowadays a lot of clothes are produced in Asia, which means they usually have to travel a long way until they reach the customers. Transportation is one important thing to consider. Packaging could contribute to another unnecessary waste. Storage such as warehouse also requires energy, especially in places where weather can be detrimental to the clothes. Whether the materials are fair-trade or the clothes are ethically made can play a big role for the local communities.

Isabell de Hillerin is working with local manufacturers in Romania and Moldova to support the production of handmade materials, which are then beautifully and skillfully incorporated into her excellent well-cut pieces.

USE
This stage is mostly related to us consumers. We should use our clothes as often as possible, this means that we have to be conscious of what suits us best and what to buy, so we don’t end up hanging those in the closet only. The cleaning method of the clothes is also important. If the clothes has to be dry-cleaned, it not only adds to the bills but also pollutes the environment when non-green products are using. I personally prefer those items that could be cleaned and cared at home. Clothing company can teach customers how to take care of their clothes so the clothes last longer. Company can also consider providing repairing service, which could prolong the life time of clothing.

Nudie Jeans is one company that provides repairing service for your favorite Nudie jeans.

END OF LIFE
When a piece of clothes served its term and is no longer flattering, we need to think about how we could use the last bits. Upcycling is great as there are numerous innovative ways to sew different pieces from old clothes to make them a piece of “new” clothes. With new technology now it’s also possible to recycle many fabric fibers from the old clothes.

HM Conscious Exclusive Collection 2016: Materials include organic silk, hemp, recycled linen and Tencel® blends as well as new innovative materials, such as beads and rhinestones made from recycled glass, and Denimite − fabric made from recycled worn-out denim, of which H&M is the first fashion company to utilize.

As consumers we probably don’t have direct controls in many of the stages, but we can always choose the clothes using sustainable materials such as organic cotton or recycled materials, locally or ethically produced, that have time-less design and are durable so we could use it longer. I also hope those eco-friendly clothes will be affordable so many people will wear them. Green fashion needs to be in everybody’s life, not another new line of “luxury” which are only accessible to a few.

Pacifica Devocean Vegan Lipsticks Review

When I found Pacifica I was so excited! This is one brand that devotes themselves to create beautiful vegan, cruelty-free and natural products. The price might be more expensive than you expected from “drugstore” stuff but they do use high quality natural ingredients, which is worth paying a bit more. After all, we need to really take care of our skin.
pacifica-devocean-lipsticks-swatch-1

If you live in the US then you are lucky. There are so many to choose from. For me I can only try some products my local vegan store happens to carry as currently the Pacifica online store does’t ship worldwide yet. The first ones I tried are the lipsticks – Devocean line. Those are highly pigmented, so it would mostly cover the original color of your lips. At the beginning I was really not used to that, especially when it was just applied, as it feels like plastic layer on my lips, however, upon drying up it becomes more natural. The formula is moisturizing, but definitely not as the same as lip balm, so if you have extremely dry lips, prime it with a layer of lip balm. I like the slim design of the tube as it makes it easy to glide over the lips, especially for thin lips. I found traditional lipstick tubes more challenging and I might need help from lip brush, but this one is small enough to apply in a finely way. Not to mention it takes less space in the purse or bag, which is important for us petites who usually carry smaller bags.

Sunny Walk at Skinnarviksberget

DAGMAR top EU XS / old cotton culottes / TIMBERLAND sandals EU 37

When the tallest tree in our playground started to turn yellow, I know the fall was coming, even though it might still be green around.

I love fall. It is blessed with amazingly blue sky and warm sunshine in the afternoon. For a moment you might have an illusion that summer is still here. When the sun is up high, I feel like taking a walking around Skinnarviksberget. It’s one of the best points to get a nice view of the Gamla Stan, city hall and the Norr Malärstrand.

I was wearing the Dagmar orange/golden top. The color reminds me of the fall. It’s made of lyocell, which is said to be one of the greenest artificial fabric made from plants. It’s cool and drapes very well. As usual the regular XS might still be big and long on a small petite body, so I have shortened the shoulder parts by 5 cm where the front and back pieces meet. I paired it with my old lake blue cotton culottes that I bought almost 10 years ago. If you have a bit extra on your legs, culottes could be a good option in summer. It’s airy and covers the line of your legs well.

Just like the tree in our playground, some leaves couldn’t wait for their fall suit, even their pals were still dressing in summer green.

Mineral Fusion Foundation, Concealer, Eyeliner, Mascara, Lipstick Review

When I decided to dress more mature, I also decided to try some makeup. My first adventure is to find vegan or vegetarian ones with mild ingredients that cater to more sensitive skin (aka “free from many irritants” type), and Mineral Fusion came to my attention.

To be honest, I don’t know what my must-haves are so far, so I started from the basics. Here are the stuff I got.
Mineral Fusion Foundation Concealer Eyeliner and Lipstick

Mineral Fusion Liquid Foundation – Warm 1
Ingredients:
Aqua, caprylic/capric triglyceride, beeswax, stearic acid, glycerol caprylate, glycol palmitate, glyceryl stearate, silica, oryza sativa (rice) starch, mica, dimethicone, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter) fruit, tocopherol (vitamin E), palmitoyl tripeptide-5, aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) leaf extract, roman anthemis nobilis (chamomile) extract, lavandula angustifolia (lavender) extract, rosa canina (rosehip) oil, aspalathus linearis (rooibos red tea), thymus vulgaris (thyme) extract, olea europaea (olive) leaf extract, camellia sinensis (green tea) leaf extract, punica granatum (pomegranate) extract, glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice) root powder, l-ascorbic acid (vitamin C), phenoxyethanol. May Contain (+/-): Titanium dioxide, black iron oxide, red iron oxide, yellow iron oxide.

Although I always like the frosty bottle, I do find it a bit troublesome to pour it out without a pump sometimes. Since this foundation is fragrance free, it smells its natural smell. You might not like it when you apply but it disappears soon when you spread out. The color is suitable for lighter Asian skin with warm tone, although since I got a bit tan in holiday in winter it appears a bit too white on me. Sometimes I mix my moisturizer and foundation with 50% of each, this way makes it more a sheer appearance, but more deeply hydrated when the weather is super dry. I might try a darker shade next time I order, although finding the foundation with the right tone is never easy, I heard, lol.

Mineral Fusion Duo Concealer – Warm
Ingredients:
Caprylic/capric triglyceride, euphorbia cerifera (candelilla) wax, copernicia cerifera (carnauba) wax, silica, jojoba esters, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), pinus pinaster bark extract (pycnogenol), zinc oxide, stearyl glycyrrhetinate (licorice root), tocopheryl acetate (vitamin e), carthamus tinctorius (safflower) seed oil, camellia sinensis (white tea) leaf extract, aspalathus linearis (rooibos red tea) leaf extract, punica granatum (pomegranate) seed extract, ascorbyl palmitate (vitamin c), phenoxyethanol. May contain (+/-):) titanium dioxide (CI 77891), iron oxides (CI 77499, CI 77491, CI 77492)
Cruelty-free.Vegan.

I got the same toned concealer to go with my foundation, although sometimes I use it alone when I don’t use foundation. However, this is not a heavy duty concealer, so if you have very serious dark circles around your eyes it might not cover it fully. I normally apply the darker color first over the dark circle areas, dab it a bit, then the lighter color around the edge to blend it well with the rest.

Mineral Fusion Lipstick – Ruby
Ingredients:
Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil*, trioctyldodecyl citrate, ricinus communis (castor) seed oil*, sesamum indicum (sesame) seed oil*, euphorbia cerifera (candelilla) wax, copernicia cerifera (carnauba) wax*, vegetable oil, theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter*, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil*, persea gratissima (avocado) oil*, thymus vulgaris (thyme) oil*, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) oil*, aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) leaf extract*, vaccinium macrocarpon (cranberry) seed oil*, camellia sinensis (white tea) leaf oil*, cyclopia intermedia (honeybush) leaf oil*, punica granatum (pomegranate) oil*, l-ascorbic acid (vitamin C), tocopherol (vitamin E). May Contain (+/-): Mica, titanium dioxide, iron oxide.

To be honest, finding a vegan lipstick is not easy. With limited brands your choices of the right shades are also limited. Not to mention as I must shop online, without trying it on my lips, I have no idea what it would appear like when applied.

My first try is the Ruby one. What I really love about this one is that it’s very hydrating and has great ingredients. I can simply apply it alone without lip balm. The color is bright wine red, although it is not pigmented or long lasting if you want something that stays on for a long time. I always like to wipe lipstick off when eating, so I don’t bother reapplying every few hours.

Mineral Fusion Liquid Eyeliner – Ebony
Ingredients:
Aqua, vegetable glycerin, behenic acid, cellulose gum, vegetable squalane, xanthan gum, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, chamomilla recutita (matricaria) extract, beeswax, perilla ocymoides extract, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), citrus grandis (grapefruit) seed extract, roman anthemis nobilis (chamomile) extract, aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) leaf juice, tocopherol (vitamin E), caprylic glycol. May Contain (+/-): Red iron oxide, yellow iron oxide, black iron oxide, titanium dioxide.

For beginner liquid eyeliner is surely a challenge, and after ten or more tries, I felt I more or less got better. What I like about this product is its ingredients, what I don’t like is the pen itself. The holder part looks beautiful but it’s too thin to hold, which makes application more difficult, especially for unsteady hands as a beginner. Sometimes I would accidentally got the ink into my hands, and it can be messy. The tip doesn’t feel easy to use either, and sometimes I got the ink to my eyelashes by accident, although I am not sure whether it’s because I am just a beginner. The color is super dark black, which makes the makeup a bit too “obvious” on my brown eyes. I wonder if the other brown shade called Valley would work better. The eyeliner stays long and almost water-proof as long as you don’t rub it, especially with water or tears. When removing you can simply moisturize them with damp cotton pads, then use q-tip to brush it off. You don’t even need eye makup remover, which is great!

Mineral Fusion, Waterproof Mascara, Cocoa, 0.57 fl oz (17 ml)
Ingredients:
Aqua, carnauba (copernicia cerifera) wax, cera alba (beeswax), arabica gum, alcohol, sodium dehydroacetate, dehydroxanthan gum, emulsifying wax, tocopherol (vitamin E), origanum vulgare (oregano) leaf extract, argania spinosa (argan) oil, aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) leaf juice, rosa canina (rosehip) flower extract, panthenol (vitamin B5), green tea (camellia sinensis) extract, phenoxyethanol. May Contain (+/-): Titanium dioxide, black iron oxide, red iron oxide, yellow iron oxide.

I bought a lighter shade for mascara. The color looks dark brown but when applied it’s kind of black, not brownish at all, however it goes well with my brown eyes. Compared to the eyeliner, I would say this one is unfortunately a bit disappointing. Pros: it contains rather natural ingredients and doesn’t smudge easily. Cons: the brush is way too large which making the application very messy, it gets easily on my eyelid or under my eyes; the formula is slightly dry so it doesn’t coat evenly, instead it looks a bit clumpy; occasionally tiny flakes might get into eyes and causes irritation; when completely dried it has to be removed by oil cleanser (see how to make your own HERE) instead of using only warm water.

Overall I like Mineral Fusion, and I would like to try some other shades of the same products. I do hope in the future the issues I mentioned would be improved though.
